Simon Grace is a main character in The Spiderwick Chronicles. In the television series, he is portrayed by Noah Cottrell. In the film, he is portrayed by British actor Freddie Highmore. Highmore also voices the twins in the video game.
Biography[]
Book Series[]
Simon is nerdy and is respectful of authority. He cares for animals and fairies greatly, even to the extent of housing and nurturing a griffin. He is calm, shy, and caring, and known for protecting his twin on many occasions. Amongst the faeries, Simon is friends with Thimbletack the brownie, and the hobgoblin Hogsqueal, whom he rescues. He also rescues a griffin, whom he names Byron, and who in a way becomes his pet after Simon cares for and houses him. Simon’s enemies consist of Mulgarath the ogre, goblins that were Mulgarath's henchmen, and Red Cap, leader of the goblins.
In the books, he has a cat called Tibbs, some tadpoles, and two mice called Lemondrop and Jeffrey; he also had lizards which he kept in tanks. In the end, Thimbletack froze the tadpoles into ice blocks and Tibbs was eaten by the goblins. After being freed by Jared he found a new kitten. Jeffrey and Lemondrop were taken by Thimbletack. He returned them when his new house was built. In a way he also had Byron the griffin when he was cut by a goblin.
Film[]
Simon is one of Helen's twin sons. He is abducted by goblins led by Redcap. He is taken to the goblins' campsite where he encounters Mulgarath disguised as an old man. Simon is eventually released by Mulgarath to fetch the Field Guide. He fights over the book with his brother Jared before fleeing back to the house with him. Simon assists in defending the house from goblins alongside his sister Mallory. He helps summon a griffin with the Field Guide's help and eventually confronts and defeats Mulgarath.
TV Series[]
Simon relocates to the Spiderwick estate with his family. He experiences unexplained incidents along with his siblings, including the disappearance of his pet mice and Mallory's damaged sword. Simon encounters Aunt Lucinda and Thimbletack in Arthur Spiderwick's study, where they task him and Jared with recovering the Field Guide.
He is skeptical of Jared's claims about the boggart until encountering Thimbletack himself. Simon is blamed for various incidents, including a broken arm sustained by Jared while attempting to contact Thimbletack. He assists Jared in recovering the dragon page and attempts to mend their relationship after a falling out. Simon plays a crucial role in defeating Mulgarath, aiding Jared during a confrontation at Spiderwick house and later reuniting with his family in the fairy realm.
