Jared Evan Grace is the main character in The Spiderwick Chronicles. He is the son of Helen and Richard Grace. He has a twin brother named Simon, and an older sister named Mallory.
In the film, Jared is portrayed by Freddie Highmore. In the television series he is portrayed by Lyon Daniels.

Jared arrives at the Spiderwick estate with his mother and brothers, of the four he is the one who is most reluctant after the move from New York, he helps his brothers and mother unpack and together with Simon he sleeps in one of the rooms on the second floor.
That same night he begins to hear strange noises in the house, Mallory wakes him up to help her find that mysterious noise that they speculate is a squirrel. Later the noise reaches the kitchen, there Mallory breaks a piece of the wall where she finds a pile of objects, including one of her fencing medals.
When his parents, Helen Grace and Richard Grace divorced, he became troublesome and constantly frustrated and upset.
Film[]
Jared is Helen's son who is initially angry about moving to the Spiderwick estate after his parents' divorce. He discovers Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide in a hidden dumbwaiter and encounters various magical creatures, including the brownie Thimbletack and the hobgoblin Hogsqueal.
Jared witnesses his brother Simon's abduction by goblins and later fights off goblins alongside his sister Mallory using the information from the Field Guide. He visits Arthur's daughter, Lucinda Spiderwick, for advice and learns about his great-grandfather's captivity by the sylphs. Jared helps summon a griffin with the Field Guide's help and eventually confronts and defeats Mulgarath, reconciling with his mother in the process.
TV Series[]
Jared is Helen's troubled teenage son who has oppositional defiance disorder. He experiences unexplained incidents in the Spiderwick estate, including the disappearance of Simon's pet mice and Mallory's sword being damaged. Jared encounters the boggart Thimbletack in the attic and tries to convince his skeptical siblings and Calliope about its existence.
Later, he and Simon encounter Aunt Lucinda and Thimbletack, who task them with recovering Spiderwick's Field Guide. Jared is blamed for several incidents, including an unseen force tying Mallory's hair and killing Simon's pet mice Lemondrop and Jeffrey. He sustains a broken arm while attempting to contact Thimbletack, and exposes "Dr Brauer" as Mulgarath by lacing cookies with iron.
Jared has a falling out with Simon, leading to a strained relationship between the brothers. He is detained at Meskawki Hospital, where Mulgarath impersonates various people to coerce him into releasing the dragon page. Jared orchestrates an escape with Thimbletack's help, confronts Simon about his deception, and later confronts Mulgarath during a confrontation at Spiderwick house. He plays a key role in defeating Mulgarath and reuniting with his family in the fairy realm.
Appearance[]
In the film, Jared is a thin nine-year-old boy with pale skin, short black hair, and hazel-brown eyes. In the TV series, Jared is black with dark curly hair.
Personality[]
Unlike his brother Simon, Jared is a very problematic and rebellious boy who used to get into a lot of trouble, which increased after his parents' divorce. He also showed great curiosity about mysterious things.
