A Hippogriff is the offspring of a horse and a Griffin. It is said to be a symbol of the enduring power and love, as the Gryphon and the equine are generally mortal enemies.
Behind the scenes[]
In legends and myth, a Hippogriff is a creature with the hindlegs and tail of a horse and the forelegs and head of a Griffin. The legendary beast originated from the old saying "mate Gryphons with mares", which indicated an impossibilty as Grifins were said to hate horses. In later stories and in modern fantasy, the Hippogriff are popular to depict, most notably in the Harry Potter book and film series.
Note: In the Swedish translation for Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You (called Arthur Spiderwick's Fälthandbok Över Vår Sagolika Omgivning), the word "hippogriff" has been replaced with "pegas". In Greek mythology, Pegasus was a white winged, divine horse who didn't have any connection to the Griffin at all.
